The author, Mr. Treager was a member of the Polynesian Society, currently managed by the University of Auckland, New Zealand. The Society, through its Journal, has played a pivotal role in scholarly work on Mangareva. The greatest pioneer of Māori and Mangarevan linguistics and lexicology, Edward Robert Treager (1846-1931), was a member of its Council when formed in 1892. At that time the Society was under the Patronage of Her Majesty Lili'uokalani, Queen of Hawai'i (1838-1917). In those days, a volume of this type represented a tremendous effort to take a spoken language that had never been written, and, present it for the first time in prose. Although there is no 'English to Mangarevan' section; this was typical of its day. Volumes of this sort were geared only to scholars and fortunately are now available to the public.
